A while back, Everyman launched their Grafton pen on Kickstarter. They managed to raise over $53,000 and, while I didn’t initially back the pen, the fact that they raised so much capital got my attention.
When the Grafton showed up on Massdrop again recently, I snagged one. I figured for the cost of a couple of lunches, why not? Well, I’ll tell you why not… Because it’s an awful pen.
First, the click mechanism feels like it’s full of sand and on my pen, the nock is crooked. On their website, they address a crooked nock and just say to tighten it all the way, which mine already was. I unscrewed it all the way thinking maybe it was cross-threaded to find a cheap, plastic nock mechanism underneath (oh yeah, this is just oozing quality craftsmanship guys **insert eyeroll emoji here**) and then screwed it back on and it was still crooked as a politician.
The clip is loose and has far too much side-to-side movement and to top it all off, the finish on mine is pretty uneven and looks terrible. It uses an “Everyman” refill (based on the Pilot G2 according to them) but it appears to just be a rebranded Pilot G2 or a Pilot G2 knock-off with their name on it. Which is strange to me.
The front section of the pen threads feel the same as the nock — just a gritty, nasty mess. The front section of the pen has evenly-spaced grip grooves cut into it except for the last one, which offset more than the rest. The fact that they didn’t take the millisecond to even these up in their design software is just further testament to the fact that this pen is poorly designed and manufactured.
All-in-all, this pen is a complete waste of time and money. Their claim that this is a “thoughtfully designed, buy-for-life pen” is a far cry from reality. It’s a cheaply-made, rush design meant to get a bunch of money from Kickstarter. Not a pen meant to be used for years and years or a pen that you can be proud to own or give as a gift as they claim.
Stay far away from this pen and, instead, spend a few bucks more on a variety of other, far nicer Pilot G2/Fisher Refill pens like those offered by KarasKustoms, TactileTurn, etc. Also, Massdrop should seriously reconsider ever offering this pen on their website again.
This review is rather curt, I know. But with a pen this bad, there’s not much to say. And while I had initially thought of giving this away to a reader, I’ve decided that would be unfair to the winner so will likely retire this to a desk drawer.
